That's a long run. I remember the show from reruns but it never seemed to gain the status of cult following to me and the reruns weren't around much. Maybe it is because the rights to the show were held by Ozzie Nelson himself and syndication from a big studio was not in the cards.

Once in a while we got a glimpse of some faded print or a few selected episodes when the show ran on the Disney Channel years ago. There are also a lot of public domain type DVDs out there that are so washed out you can't tell whether you are watching Ozzie or Harriet!

Apparently for years the heirs of the Nelsons have been working on getting the series released on DVD and it is finally here...at least the first few seasons.

Of course the Nostalgic Rambler wanted to see this show so the DVDs are part of our daily viewing for now. Season One is on the agenda. It is really a charming show but very slow moving. The opening of the show features the lengthy "here's Ozzie...here's Harriet...here's David...here's Ricky..." which is gets kind of old after the first few shows...we KNOW who they are! The camera doesn't really move around much. "I Love Lucy" was also filmed around this time and you can sure tell the difference between the way the camera angles were thought out on "Lucy" compared to O&H.

It's fun to watch for famous guest stars...or actors who were not house hold names yet. A very tiny Jerry Mathers aka the Beaver makes an appearance for instance as a trick or treater in a Halloween episode and Ellen Grandma Walton Corby plays Harriet's aunt in a show.

I imagine the later seasons may attract more DVD interest as heart throb Ricky Nelson starts his singing career. In season one he is a little boy far from any imagination of rock star status. The shows revolve around simple themes and yes they are very corny for our times...but as times get more and more complicated it is a great escape to the 1950s past of huge houses, housewives that look like they are ready to appear on a fashion show, men dressed in suits, and kids who are so polite and sweet you may need your diabetic medication. You gotta love the Nelsons and Ozzie and Harriet is a great series to discover for the first time or re-discover again.

Although a few sponsor tags were left in, it would have been nice to see the original commercials...and there aren't any extras on the DVD but it's worth a look. An MPI Home video release.
Jeff Borgerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05746562908842181199noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1925161667750387193.post-52102158083384074372022-04-29T16:52:00.001-04:002022-04-29T16:52:04.809-04:00Songsmith Jimmy Van Heusen
Through my life I have enjoyed singing (mostly to myself) and many of my favorite songs were originally sung by the likes of Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra and....many of those were written by the one and only Jimmy Van Heusen.

Although his name has been familiar to me, I didn't know much of his background. And unlike some of the other songwriters of the 40s and 50s, Van Heusen has not been as recognized as other guys like Irving Berlin or Rodgers and Hammerstein.

Van Heusen wrote a lot of the songs made famous by Bing Crosby such as "Swinging on a Star" and one of my favorites, the title song to the movie "Going My Way" with Bing and Ingrid Bergman.

After the Bing era, he became pals and was the main tune-smith for Sinatra. Their iconic show "I Love Lucy" has been a constant in an ever changing life. Every time someone writes a book or puts out a movie about them or the show, I get hyper critical as these are "my" people and I want it to be right.

Lucie Arnaz did it right in her 1993 Documentary "Lucy and Desi: A Home Movie." It had many gems including those beautiful color silent family movies of the couple and their family. It's been many years since that documentary was made. What else needed to be told?

I was not a fan of Amazon's movie "Being the Ricardos." It took too many liberties in telling the story. My review of that film would be a Ricky Ricardo "eye yay yay yay yay." And yes, since I have devoured every book, newspaper, magazine article and TV interview since the 1970s and watched their work incessantly, any little discrepancy irks me.

That being told, the newest entry in the Lucy/Desi story is the Amy Poehler production called simply "Lucy and Desi". The simple title is almost as iconic as Desi's book which he called "A Book"... because he said that is what it was!

There's an old big band song that has the lyrics "it seems to me I've heard that song before...." and that's the way I felt about much of Poehler's "Lucy and Desi." Many of the audio excerpts, pictures and interviews were very familiar. She had access to a lot of material however that was "new", provided by Lucie Arnaz. That made all the difference. That audio of Lucy and Desi telling their stories was woven together in a delightful way. She uses clips of "I Love Lucy" very cleverly to move the story of the real life couple along. It's all the same story I've heard so many times but this time it is fresh once again. So I give it a thumbs up/must watch for old Lucy fans like me or people who say "Lucy Desi who?" In my mind, I fancy myself as an expert in the area of Lucy and Desi and could have easily put together this documentary. Even though Poehler didn't ask me for any advice (tongue planted firmly in cheek as I write this....) she did great. What a "wundaful" job she did with "my" people's story.

I found it amusing that on "I Love Lucy" there were three writers for the first few years and a staff of experts you can see on the show credits that run for a few seconds to list them all. This documentary production had a zillion producers/directors/advisors and even make-up people. My my, have times changed!

I forgive Amy for using the syndicated opening of "I Love Lucy" in telling the story but of course the heart on satin is so iconic that that opening just HAD to be featured. I guess the folks in the documentary COULD have been watching a rerun!

I hope newer generations will continue to discover "I Love Lucy." Despite all the Amazon hoopla, Sirius/XM "Let's Talk with Lucy" show and interest in their lives, I am amazed at bloggers and commentaries of younger people who have never even seen an "I Love Lucy" episode. It just isn't on all over the TV as it was when I was young.

For anyone out there who wants a few gems from my archives, here are a few links.

My blog where I have digitalized some of my Lucy/Desi archives (I have so much more and really need to start this up again...but time slips away...) Lucy Archives

An audio interview from Desi recorded off of the TV onto my little cassette player as he visited Detroit for his book promotion (I am so proud that the TCM podcast used my Lou Gordon Show audio....even though I wasn't mentioned....) Desi Arnaz in Detroit

And here's a show I just uploaded. Right down the road from my grandparent's house was WKBD Channel 50.

That's where all the TV shows we watched as kids came from, everything from I Love Lucy to Speed Racer. When "Lucy" star Desi Arnaz came to town I recorded the audio of his appearance on the famous "Lou Gordon Show" which is on Youtube here. Gordon was a controversial talk show host on Channel 50 and even for today's standards would be considered rude. He even got poor Desi upset by the end of his visit! The video tapes of Gordon's show were apparently not saved so my audio might be the only copy of Desi's visit to Detroit.

I was pleased to discover that author Christopher Lock has just published a brand new book on Channel 50. It's not a boring look at the station today, which is now nothing like it was in the 1960s and 1970s...this book takes us back to the "golden years" of WKBD, with pictures and details of most of the programs that were on back then.

If you'd like to be transported back to the baby boomer 60s and 70s of Detroit TV, you will love this time capsule.

On a recent vacation to my hometown Detroit area, I stopped by Dwight D. Eisenhower Elementary school in Southfield. Sad to say, but it is abandoned, closed and run down.

I was a student there when it opened in 1970 and recently found the dedication program my parents attended in 1971.

Eisenhower was a great Elementary school. I fondly recall sitting in the "commons" area watching the fledgling PBS TV system for the "Electric Company." The art classes offered everything from a kiln to fire our clay projects to learning paper mache'. I remember music class and letting us bring in our favorite 45s to play in class. I was already then a mini nostalgic rambler as I brought in songs from "My Fair Lady" or Vaughn Monroe! I played floor hockey in the gym and gave a performance or two on the stage there for various Christmas programs, probably playing the accordion.

Since we were the first group there, we spruced up the side of the property by planting trees as a student body. I think we even had a garden.

We raised money for the projects by bringing in popcorn poppers from home and selling popcorn in school. Can you believe it?!

The former President Eisenhower had passed away in 1969 and he was very well loved, thus naming the school after him. Some of the quotes from the dedication ceremony celebrate the man. From his first inaugural address this quote "Almighty God...Give us the power to discern right from wrong...to work for men everywhere." Powerful words today that probably wouldn't be tolerated.

"Ike", as he was known, said "there is nothing wrong with America that faith, love of freedom, intelligence and energy of her citizens cannot cure." Wow.

Eisenhower Elementary school is falling apart, much like the values the Ike and the 1950s when he was president idealized.

I'm a bit sad....

In the prehistoric days when I was a kid, I would set my cassette recorder next to the TV set and record the sound of "I Love Lucy." In the prehistoric days when Vic Mignogna was a kid, he would set his cassette recorder next to the TV set and record the sound of "Star Trek." Then he'd listen to those tapes for hours. A wonderful Desilu Production. Vic sewed his own Trek costumes and as a child became a miniature Captain Kirk during his playtime.
As the years went by Vic Mignogna watched "Star Trek" and memorized much of the dialog.

I always thought it would have been awesome to be able to visit Desilu and see "Lucy" being filmed. I wasn't even born then, so end of that story.

Vic Mignogna was so into his favorite show he decided to become Captain Kirk and finish the five year mission of the Starship Enterprise. He came up with a show called "Star Trek Continues." The show stars Mignogna as Kirk and features a painstakingly accurate reproduction of the sets. The scripts are well written. The music and editing very much in the style of the 1960s original show.

You may not have heard about this show as it's what is considered a "fan film", not produced by the folks who now own Star Trek. The show is so realistic in its re-creation, about the only thing missing is the credit "A Desilu Production" at the end. (Lucy...why did you sell Desilu??? Your heirs could REALLY be rich now...).

Mignogna calls "Star Trek Continues" his love letter to Star Trek and it's a very expensive love letter as it is all non profit. After the first episode which he financed himself, fans donated to continue production.

You can find the shows at www.startrekcontinues.com or on Youtube.

Recently my wife and I had the chance to visit the set of "Star Trek Continues" at the Neutral Zone Studios in Kingsland, Georgia. This was a special fan appreciation day as it isn't a tourist attraction open to the public. It was a surreal experience and felt like being on the Enterprise. Vic Mignogna was there and proudly showed us the sets.
The show has been out of production for several years already. The man who now owns the studio now is paying out of his pocket to keep the sets intact. Hopefully concerned fans will keep this gem alive with donations.

Since the show was filmed, there have been changes in the rules regarding fan productions so there will be no more big scale productions like "Star Trek Continues". I guess that means I can't decide to built a replica of the Ricardo apartment set and play Ricky Ricardo... but then, I don't think I could perfect a Cuban accent anyway. I might have been able to sing Babalu though.... It would have been cool to be on the set of the Tropicana....

By the way Vic who was the brains behind "Star Trek Continues" has done lots of other things including singing and voicing anime cartoons. He is a Christian and graciously has allowed the radio station I run to air his "Gospel of John." A very interesting and talented man. Or as Spock would say "fascinating."
I have always loved reading biographies. Some of my favorites include "A Book" by Desi Arnaz, "At Random" by Bennett Cerf and " Act One" by Moss Hart. Several years ago author Gary Giddins came out with a book about the early career of Bing Crosby entitled "A Pocketful of Dreams". I've enjoyed that book immensely over the years and have waited impatiently for the next volume on Bing's life.

Well, years later it is finally here and Giddins has captivated my reading attention again. This time the book focuses on 1940 until 1946.

I soon turn 55 and lament the boring world of entertainment we live in, from the here today gone tomorrow celebrities to the rap music I have to listen to being blasted from cars next to me at the stop light. Little do the people around me know that in MY car I am probably listening to an old Kraft Music Hall broadcast with Bing or another one of my singing favorites.

These days people my age and younger MIGHT know Crosby for his Christmas music which seems to pop up annually, even if it's just White Christmas.

Hopefully there are still enough people out there who know who Bing Crosby was or are interested in knowing who he was. Gary Giddins deserves kudos (and money income) from this book!

This book is fascinating because it not only portrays Bing through the war years but weaves a portrait of some of the people who were part of his life and times. It is captivating reading about how Bing interacted with some of his fans including a couple of sisters who followed him around innocently. Some of the songwriters and film folk who were in his circle include Jimmy Van Heusen and Leo McCarey. Those people probably aren't household names anymore but even so the way they wove their craft and their intricate personalities come through in the commentary. I loved it. Most all of the stars of the time are mentioned including Bob Hope and Ingrid Bergman. Name dropping always impresses me. The book isn't just about Bing but the people and events that made up the years from 1940-1946. Sometimes a history lesson, sometimes entertainment show biz lore, sometimes facts and figures.

Bing Crosby seemed to get a bad rap after he died. His son wrote a scathing book and I remember another bio called "The Hollow Man."

Bing was definitely complex. This book presents him in all of his various traits and I have to say it is quite positive. I didn't know Bing was so involved in entertaining the troops during WWII... just as much as Bob Hope who seemed to make a life career out of letting everyone know it. Bing also valued his fans and corresponded with many of them, often for years. His "icy" side could also come through, which makes the book all the more an interesting read. He definitely was not a one dimensional man. His wife was an alcoholic long before anyone knew what to do with that. Bing coped by staying away and making movies.

The book also features some excerpts from letters Bing wrote during those years and they are often self effacing and fun. I have always loved the Crosby vocabulary. He certainly knew how to use the English language and even invented words of his own.

Thanks Gary Giddins for transporting me to a time where I fit in. I wasn't even alive then but the names and music are all very relevant to me. It was great fun to whirl through the book and captivate myself in the people and storyline. Don't know if Giddins is planning another volume. I hope so but if it's like the time between the first and this one, I'll have lots of time to savor this new edition for years to come.

Back in 1985 I was a television intern at Metrovision of Oakland County. This was a cable TV outfit in Farmington Hills, Michigan, the city my grandparents lived in.

The cable station had a "community access" TV channel where folks from the community could come in and produce whatever they wanted to for airing on the station.

Most of the shows were talking heads and could have been better suited for radio! I remember there were some really interesting shows on there...one was called "The Shores of Your Mind" and was hosted by a psychic! There was also a popular local cooking show with a lady named Judy Antishin.

I thought it would be fun to put together a music show, so we re-created the record album of the 1950's "Music for Dining" as our starting point.

Judy Grosse, a Metrovision employee, was my co-host. As you can see here, the set was quite elaborate and we hauled stuff from home to make it happen. Even my outfit was made to look like something worn by a man in the 1950s. We picked 1950s sounding Hollywood names. I was John Linden and Judy was Joan Hudson.

Watching this now over 30 years later it is still as corny and fun as ever. The show won as best musical show of the year, which probably isn't much of a win as there weren't all that many musical shows on there to begin with.

Anyhow, if you want to turn the clock back and see me when I was 21years old, this classic gem is now on Youtube. Here's the link. Jeff Borgerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05746562908842181199noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1925161667750387193.post-29395937400870365592018-03-07T14:26:00.000-05:002018-03-26T20:16:10.774-04:00Stay Away from Loving The Classics DVDs as the lost shows are apparently still lost

I drive my wife crazy with my Jo Stafford music. I love her recordings and she is one of my favorites if not the most favorite.

She filmed a series of television specials in England in the 1960s. Famous guest stars were on the show and although I have seen a couple of them with Ella, Peggy Lee and Rosemary Clooney as guests, the other shows are apparently lost in space.

Until......Wow.....I found an outfit called "Loving The Classics" which features all kind of lost TV show and movies and guess what? They have SEVEN EPISODES of Jo's hour long programs for purchase. Of course I jumped at the chance!

Oh-oh...first of all the dvd order took about a month to arrive. Enough time to process the credit card. Well, I got TWO sets of what was supposed to be the seven hour long specials. It didn't start out well when the dvd starting skipping. I tried it in another player...the same thing. The second set skipped at the same point so the masters must be screwed up. Well I got to see about 45 minutes of Jo and Peggy Lee and an old CBS show (not from the 60 minute specials). The rest of the material was taken from a VHS tape from several years back (see pic below)...definitely not the programs in their entirety or the promised shows.

Yikes! I did a search and found a whole bunch of disgruntled customers of "Loving the Classics." So far I have sent four emails with no response but that seems to be their modus apparandi. So don't fall for their promises folks. Their webpage is very enticing but the results are dismal. Loving the Classics preys on nostalgia fans and their desire to see material that apparently just isn't around anymore...whether we want to admit it or not....

Jo Stafford Show specials.........where are you?

Update: I filed a complaint with my credit card company and that same day got an email from the company to send the faulty dvds back (at my own expense of course!) and they would refund my money. Thank you Chase Credit Cards for your great customer service...

Loving The Classics lets you review their product. I sent the review of their Jo Stafford offering which is not what they promise and of course THEY have to approve it, which they didn't. It still isn't on their site so anyone ordering these DVDs will also be duped.

I noticed if you search for "Loving The Classics complaints", a whole bunch of videos come up on Youtube but all they show is a bunch of movie posters....is this to misdirect people from the truth?Jeff Borgerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05746562908842181199noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1925161667750387193.post-68811016666605616812017-01-04T19:15:00.000-05:002017-01-04T19:15:38.186-05:00La La Land questions and commentary

Are the good old days of movie making back? The days when beautiful songs and story lines let us escape?

Well, almost....The new movie La La Land is quite an accomplishment. It even got your Nostalgic Rambler out to see it twice at the movie theater.

I am humming the music and putting myself in Ryan Gosling's dance shoes:

The movie features memorable music by Justin Hurwitz. Director Damien Chazelle did a great job of combining movie magic of the past with a current cast and story.

And as corny as it gets sometimes, it is just what I like in entertainment.
Starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling? Never heard of them before I saw La La Land but you probably already guessed they aren't on my nostalgic radar screen. Loved both of their performances.

Spoiler alert: I really didn't like the ending and if Mr. Chazelle had asked me, it would have been a formula happy one. After seeing a movie and characters I like, why do I have to be tortured with the reality of that ending?

I'll get over it.....maybe....

Anyway, here are a few questions I have:

1. Why can't I find the CD soundtrack in all the stores? I had to order it!

2. "Seb's" has a great logo. Where is all the tie-in merchandise I want to buy? Seb's shirt, Seb's tie?

3. Seb likes records. So do I, of course....but $24 for the soundtrack on LP? Even Seb couldn't afford that!Jeff Borgerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05746562908842181199noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1925161667750387193.post-19989584379828797592016-09-25T22:17:00.000-04:002016-10-01T07:24:05.705-04:00Sunshine Magazine from the House of Sunshine, Litchfield, IL
While visiting an antique shop in North Carolina I discovered an old copy of Sunshine Magazine. This has turned into the latest Nostalgic Rambler obsession and it was mighty time to do another blog so here's the low down on Sunshine Magazine.

It was started by a man named Henry F. Henrichs who at first used it to promote his business which was bringing buyers and sellers of newspapers together.

Henry Henrichs

The magazine featured light reading with lots of positive upbeat stories, riddles, and points to ponder. By the 1950s thousands of subscribers were on the mailing list.

The magazine covers and line drawings often pictured "The House of Sunshine" on them as well as Ganymede the shepherd boy. The House of Sunshine was the actual place Henrichs was headquartered in, located in Litchfield, Illinois. Highly stylized for the magazine covers and often pictured in different surroundings depending on the issue, the House of Sunshine became a tourist attraction in Litchfield and the magazines often featured praises from visitors. The building housed a library, interesting murals and art work, and a state of the art (for the time) music system. Organ concerts were often hosted for the visitors and a fountain outside lit up the place at night.

The House of Sunshine was extolled by its employees as a wonderful place to work. Mr. Henrichs published many magazines in a similar vein for various businesses to use. He also published books.

These monthly magazines brought a lot of pleasure to people. At the end of the year they were bound into 12 issue beautiful books and that is what I found at the antique store...and I have found a few more since then. The positive stories are fun to read and nothing is copyrighted in them....so I can use them on the Christian radio station I run.
Sunshine Magazine (or "magazet" as Henrichs called it) put Litchfield on the map...but it has long been defunct. What happened? The internet doesn't say much of anything about this one time very successful magazine and its amazing publisher. Henrichs later purchased a plot of land in Litchfield and called it Sunshine Park. I found it on the map and it looks like a Christian organization owns it and has a House of Sunshine Coffee Shop there now. I have contacted them to see if they have any info on the original House of Sunshine .........

Litchfield has a historical museum on old Route 66 but no info on their website about Sunshine Magazine or the House of Sunshine either.

For fun I am going to try to resurrect some of the Sunshine Magazine/House of Sunshine material on Facebook. Look for www.facebook.com/Sunshinemagazet for the postings. I couldn't use Sunshinemagazine or Houseofsunshine as they were taken, but apparently nobody except Mr. Henrichs took to the name of magazet for his very interesting life's work!

After doing some more research, I obtained the 1965 volume of magazines...and was saddened to hear that the original House of Sunshine building burned down! Here's a magazine quote:

"When the construction of the original House of Sunshine in 1940 had assumed recognizable proportions, it seemed a bit of Heaven had dropped down in the midst of the little city of Litchfield, Illinois. The populace was aflutter, not knowing, however, that the symbol of the new creation had already far outreached the local aspirations. Hordes of people came from the countryside and neighboring towns and villages daily and nightly to see the uncommon appointments of the new creation, and view its picturesque fountains and lightings. Then came visitors from far and near, and tourists detoured hundreds of miles to see the marvelous House of Sunshine....
Howbeit, the vision of grandeur was quickly quenched for the House of Sunshine in the great fire of October 30, 1964. A massive
catastrophe!"

I don't have any info after 1965 yet but that is why it looks like the current coffeehouse site might be the "new" site, as the House of Sunshine obviously continued.
I invite you to visit our webpage at www.wrge.org to find out about it.

Programming the music for this station has been fun and a challenge. We feature several "talk" segments but of course radio is 24/7 and it requires quite a music library. A friend of mine Don Ward has assisted immensely in reaching into his broadcast archives.

We like to play some of the tried and true hymns sung in churches for years. What's nice about that for me is some of America's most beloved singers recorded much of this music back in the heyday of the Nostalgic Rambler times.

Jo Stafford recorded quite a few hymns and teamed up with Gordon McCrae for some beautiful selections.

Perry Como and Tennessee Ernie Ford were adamant about their Christian beliefs...so much so that they often sang a hymn at the end of their TV show, much to the networks chagrin.

Bing Crosby recorded many songs of faith.

The nice thing about playing these songs on the radio today is that it doesn't matter that these people were beloved popular figures of yesterday. If the listeners recognize Bing or Perry from times gone by, they will find comfort in hearing them again.

If the listeners to the radio station don't know who these voices are, then they are at least hearing some high quality wonderful arrangements and talent.
At Christmas time you will hear most of these artists on most all radio stations as well featuring their "holiday" recordings. There's more to their library than "White Christmas" and "Santa Claus is Coming To Town". I'm glad to put them back in the Christian spotlight, even it's just for a limited audience on the radio in my home town!Jeff Borgerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05746562908842181199noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1925161667750387193.post-46930486939551575902015-08-19T16:35:00.001-04:002015-09-19T09:00:45.994-04:00No escaping the strange move of Sirus XMTime for me to come out of my self imposed exile from posting on the Nostalgic Rambler (I've been very busy getting a new Christian radio station ready to go on the air but more on that in the coming weeks.......)

I am here today to express my dismay, bewilderment, disgust, and all around confusion at the decision of Sirius XM Radio to dump the Escape channel from their satellite line up.

This was one of the finest broadcast presentations of the classic and beloved "easy listening" instrumental or "beautiful music" format. It was actually programmed by one of the founders of this format.

Those of you who know me know that I started the WGER 102.5 FM Appreciation Society on Facebook. WGER was at one time one of the highest rated radio stations in the entire country due to their use of the musical format formerly heard on Escape.

This instrumental music vanished in recent years from over the air radio but it had and still has a very loyal fan base. There is a Facebook page trying to assist in getting the format back on the Sirius XM satellite. I am not sure how Sirius can justify much of their niche programming without keeping Escape on, but it sounds like a personal vendetta from someone who just doesn't like this music.

Very dumbo miopic move but here's what you can learn from all of this.........
Anything on the air, whether it is on TV or radio, can vanish into thin air quickly. I learned my lesson long ago. I have enough Escape type music on my ipod that would rival the XM/Sirius programming library. I cancelled long ago when they kept alienating me by preempting the programming for weeks on end with such oddities as Barbra Streisand radio and Hanukkah radio.

When I worked in radio and enjoyed the nostalgic "Music of your Life" library back in the 1980s, I recorded the entire library for my own use and have been enjoying it ever since...even though it has been long gone in that same genre style. One of my favorite TV shows "Homefront" hasn't been rerun in years, but yes I have them all preserved so I can watch it whenever I want.

So the lesson here is if you really like something, preserve it yourself as you can't rely on popular culture to keep it in front of you. Time marches on as society devolves into further noise and nonsense. The outsourced phone operators are telling the disgruntled Escape listeners that they can find the same music on other channels. As my grandpa used to say " Boloney!" I'm glad I can "Escape" using my own carefully preserved media.

I think I'll go listen to Lex De Azevedo.........

September 19th UPDATE: The pessimist in me never thought this would happen: In a major reversal and accomplishment for beautiful music fans, Sirius XM has restored Escape to their lineup. The fans apparently bombarded them with enough cancellations that they reversed their decision. Excellent news!
I've been helping to set up a Christian radio station coming soon to my city. It is an exciting project as a music library is being assembled and programs are being recorded. You can be assured that since the project has my input, there will be plenty of songs from the artists featured here on this blog.

Anyhow due to this project there just isn't enough time for too many projects like this blog, so if posts are a little scarce you know why.... I imagine there is enough stuff on here to keep you entertained.
Radio stations once again are playing Christmas music which as usual they are calling "holiday" music. This "holiday" music, which is really "Christmas" music (!) brings a lot of our favorite recording artists out of the woodwork.
This morning our clock radio woke us up to Ray Conniff's "12 Days of Christmas." It is great to listen to Ray Conniff anytime of the year but especially at Christmas. Someone posted an entire Conniff Christmas album here so click and enjoy........ Guaranteed to put you in a Christmas (holiday) mood!

Gene is "Mr. Music" of our area and has been a beloved radio man for years. November 2 he held a big band dinner dance at the Ocala Hilton and the fans came out of the woodwork to attend. It reminded me of what it must have been like in the big band heyday.
He was the man who wrote the words to such songs as "Moon River" and "The Days of Wine and Roses." He also started Capitol Records and was closely affiliated with my favorite singer Jo Stafford and her husband Paul Weston.
We visited the Bonaventure Cemetery, a very interesting place. The movie "In The Garden Of Good and Evil" starts off there with a picture of Johnny's grave. Clint Eastwood produced that pic and used Johnny's music throughout.

This bench at the grave has several of Johnny's biggest hits engraved on it including Ac-cen-thu-ate the Positive, Autumn Leaves, Blues in the Night, Charade, Laura, My Shining Hour, and Atcheson Topeka and Santa Fe. Click on the song titles to hear them by some of the greatest including Johnny himself who sang quite well and sold a lot records in his early years.

Sadly there was a group of tourists at the grave with the tour guide asking "Does anyone know who Johnny Mercer was?" Nobody did. He was about to continue the tour without much of an explanation, so I started singing "Moon River" and told them that Johnny wrote that. They all recognized it immediately.

There are several bios out there about Johnny. There is also an excellent dvd which Clint Eastwood had a hand in as well entitled
"Johnny Mercer: The Dream's On Me."
Mercer had an interesting life. He was a genius but also an alcoholic with a mean streak. His lyrics are often very haunting and sentimental. Quite a talented man.Jeff Borgerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05746562908842181199noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1925161667750387193.post-89084586379189909732014-09-23T16:38:00.006-04:002014-09-23T16:39:20.697-04:00David Cassidy News Brings Out Partridge Family Records

Pardon my slip into the mod 1970s on this edition of the Nostalgic Rambler. I saw a recent news story that singer David Cassidy was spending time in rehab for alcoholism and it got me to thinking about the early 1970s when we were all enthralled by The Partridge Family. I wasn't even a teen then and was caught up in the fever.

If you're a young whippersnapper and haven't seen The Partridge Family, it is easy to find on Youtube, DVD or reruns.

I heard someone say "We all watched the Bradys but we all wanted to be the Partridges." How cool it would be to travel all around with your family in a bus and sing songs. Well we watched both quite religiously as I recall. And of course had to buy those records....

Who wouldn't want to be in a family where the mom is Shirley Jones of "Oklahoma!" and "Music Man" fame? Sister Susan Dey was quite a knock out and David of course was Mister Cool. Even now most of the 1970s clothes look like a fashion statement. Bell bottoms anyone!?

The whole premise of the show was totally unrealistic but it was great television escape. The country bought into the escape and often didn't even realize that the only voices on the records who were on actually the show were Jones and Cassidy, the rest were professional musicians. (I think one of the main guys is currently married to one of the Lennon Sisters of Lawrence Welk fame!)

Anyhow, I certainly wish 60 year old something David Cassidy well. I guess he did or maybe even still lives in Florida, the home of The Nostalgic Rambler! David's drinking and marital problems are sad to read about. Despite that, recent interviews show that he knows he was a positive influence on a lot of people during his career. I wish him the best and hope he can escape the demons of addiction.

So the old Partridge Family records came out of the cabinet and I'm converting them to cd. My wife had never seen The Partridge Family before. With my love of music she can probably see why I was so addicted to it in my early life. The closest I came to being a Partridge was singing in the school choir!
Today the word "legend" and "iconic" seems to refer to any Johnny-Come-Lately nobody. This Nostalgic Rambler posting is about a true legend, icon and genius, Mr. Henry Mancini.

Mr. Mancini did a lot of music for film and television but it was not the average melody to be forgotten. Many songs are now legendary and one of a kind. Back when postage was only 37 cents we got to celebrate Mancini with a stamp. There were so many hits they couldn't fit them all on the stamp. Notice the Pink Panther on the left of the stamp. He wrote that theme, too.

Although the movie is one of the strangest stories I've ever seen, the music to Breakfast at Tiffany's is magnificent. The opening credits with Audrey and Mancini's music is just lovely and when she sings the song "Moon River" during the movie, it is film magic.

I will have to do a blog sometime on lyric genius Johnny Mercer, another one of my favorites. The lyrics to The Days of Wine and Roses are achingly beautiful and Mancini's music is iconic.

Mancini and Mercer were Academy Award winners, but everyone knows that, don't they? Probably not anymore...that's why we're here! I like these pics. Mancini guested on Lawrence Welk and the audience loved it. Pic on right is Mancini with Mercer.

I had the privilege of seeing Henry Mancini in concert in Sarasota Florida years ago. He was so easy going and likeable. He said something along these lines. "People tell me they hear my music in elevators. Don't feel sorry for me. Every time they play my songs in those elevators, I get paid..."
It's hot and it's summer so we need to cool off with a nice can or bottle of pop. When I moved to Florida years ago, I found out it is called "soda" here, but in Michigan we call it pop and thus shall it always be.

One of Detroit's best pops is made by Faygo with such iconic flavors and tastes as Rock & Rye and Redpop.
There aren't too many iconic TV commercials out there anymore but in the Nostalgic Rambler's childhood there were quite a few. Faygo had some really great ones. Click here for the singing very nostalgic commercial that will make you want a Faygo pop right now. Here (with Laurel and Hardy...) and here are a couple of other ones that are really cute.
Oddly enough Faygo is apparently now owned by a Florida company even though it's still made in Detroit.
It's summer and the Nostalgic Rambler is lazy from the heat.

Summer tends to have me taking out the happy records to listen to and Miss Connie Francis is one of those happy sounds.

She is one of those world known celebrities and was a bit hit in Japan, Sweden, Italy and Germany as well as points in between.

Several years back the Germans re-lived their Connie Francis love affair by releasing an interesting re-mix of her songs, which made her a hit all over again. Listen to it and see Connie on TV by clicking here.
As I say, summertime makes the Nostalgic Rambler a bit on the lazy side so instead of my ramblings on Connie, I invited you to listen to a couple of her great summer sounding songs. Thanks for the summer music fun Connie! Hopefully everyone has her in their library, but if not find buy a CD, an LP, or download some of her albums for a sure summer hit.
"The Saturday Night Stereo Dance Party" airs on that station. If you're not local, hopefully they will be on the world wide web soon so you can listen in!

In the meantime, don't forget about our "Nostalgic Rambler" show every Saturday from 2-4pm on WKSG 89.5 FM in Ocala, Florida or on the web at www.TheGeneMartinShow.com.

In the meantime music still fills our days in other ways. We have another radio station locally "Gold 99" which airs a satellite feed of "America's Best Music." It's a good mix of favorites and includes some nice surprises once in a while.

I'm no big fan of The Beatles, but was charmed when they played a song by Paul McCartney. It was his version of the ancient Irving Berlin classic "Always." Click here to enjoy it.

Or if you want a more vintage version here's Norma Zimmer from "The Lawrence Welk Show" singing the song back in the black and white TV days.

Irving Berlin was a genius and it's great to see his music being kept alive by a Rock and Roll icon like McCartney.

The show ran from 1950 to 1967 (!) on CBS and featured practically every famous person through the years coming through as a mystery guest.

Being on for so many years, the audience felt that they knew the panelists. Dorothy Kilgallen was a gossip columnist, Arlene Francis hosted and appeared on many other tv shows, and Bennett Cerf was the guy who started the publishing gianthouse Random House (see a previous Nostalgic Rambler entry about him by clicking here.) John Daly was an ABC newsman but did his What's My Line? stint for all those years on CBS.

The panelists try to guess the occupations of regular folk but the mystery guest ("for which as always my friends on the panel on blindfolded...blindfolds in place panel???...Enter mystery guest and sign in please!" was always a highlight. Everyone from Salvadore Dali to Barbra Streisand came on the show.
Why am I watching all of these shows? Years ago they were on Game Show Network but have long vanished again from over the air TV. With the advent of the Roku and Youtube, I can see them anytime I want. Don't have to wait for Sunday night at 10:30pm on CBS as they did back in the 1950s. That's one good thing about living today instead of then, but I do wish I had met Bennett Cerf. Maybe he would have published my book "The Little Grownup"!
I recently found a nostalgic look at television past and TV personality Jack Paar through his book "My Saber Is Bent." Jack was the host of "Tonight" on NBC before Johnny Carson. I have to admit the stars of the Tonight show including Carson, Steve Allen and Jack Paar were very interesting men. As usual the Nostalgic Rambler hasn't followed the current incarnation of "The Tonight Show" since Johnny retired.
I found Paar's comments on life fascinating and opinionated. Lots of his stuff isn't too politically correct today but I guess we won't worry about that since there aren't many chances to read his books or watch his old shows anymore anyhow.
I wondered who Jack Paar was talking about when he said that his most interesting guest was Alexander King. He was a raconteur. What in the dickens is a raconteur? I looked it up and it simply means a person skilled at telling stories or anecdotes. Well, Jack was pretty good at that, too. King however must have really been a character. Since King wrote the introduction to Jack Paar's book and was a popular author in his day, surely his books are still around. Or are they?
He was a best selling author but today even our local library didn't have anything by him. They were able to get the book "Mine Enemy Grows Older" from another library here in the state on loan. So I spent the last few days seeing why Jack Paar was so in love with King's storytelling. He rambles on much in the fashion the Nostalgic Rambler would, going from various anecdotes of growing up in Vienna to being in drug rehabilitation to being editor at LIFE magazine. (note: the Nostalgic Rambler grew up in Detroit, was never in drug rehab or the editor of anything except a couple of blogs...)

You can listen to Alexander as a guest with Jack Paar by clicking here. Too bad there is no video but you get a good idea of his ramblings.

I did a little more delving on line and found that one of his wives has a blog featuring more info on him. King and even Jack Paar are mostly forgotten but if you delve you can find some of their wit. I hope in fifty years someone will remember me. In 1959 in reached #5 on the hit list. German isn't known as a beautiful language of song. Perhaps it was the charming voice of Austrian singer Lolita or all of those German immigrants pining for their homeland.

Listen to the song with its English translation in the middle (not too accurate but what do you expect for an American release?). Click here.

Why was the song a big hit? Maybe it was just because the song is catchy and melancholic? It's about a sailor and how his home is the sea. My parents played this song and the whole album over and over when I was growing up (they are from Germany). My grandma loved this song and my step grandpa didn't understand German. He heard the song so many times he finally made up his own English version "Sea man, Sea man, go jump in a lake!"
It's amazing to read the comments on Youtube about how this song affected people. Seems like lots of German immigrant kids recall their elders listening to Seeman. Nice.
Lolita released a few albums in the US but never had another big hit here. She was a big star in Europe and continued appearing on TV and making records until her death from cancer several years back.Jeff Borgerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05746562908842181199noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1925161667750387193.post-39399132916394550032014-03-23T20:36:00.001-04:002014-03-23T20:36:13.428-04:00Fifty like me: Disney's "It's A Small World" ride

Well, folks, I turned fifty this year, but I'm in good company. The Disney ride "It's A Small Small World" is turning fifty this year as well and it is holding up just as good as I am (!).

Truth be told, me favorite ride isn't "It's a Small World." My favorite is the Carousel of Progress, which apparently is also celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, too. It had a catchy song as well, but not as catchy as "It's A Small World" so maybe that's why the media is focusing on all of those dancing dolls.

Kids are always fascinating to watch at Disney World. One young boy was terrified about getting on this ride. He was screaming at the top of his lungs. I guess the thought of dancing dolls was just too much for him. His Mama said "you are going to GET on that boat...NOW!" and he did!

By the way, Walt Disney World is doing a great job keeping these nostalgic rides open for new generations to enjoy. I'm not amused at the increasing ticket prices or huge crowds that make you feel like sheep being herded from one ride to another, but it still is The Wonderful World of Disney.
